Jury Duty
Information
The North Carolina General Assembly has declared that the public
policy of the State of North Carolina be that jury service is the solemn
obligation of each and every citizen of our State. Each year an average of eight jury
panels are drawn for Civil or Criminal sessions of Court for Yancey
County. Individuals are
summoned by the Sheriff to serve for designated sessions after being drawn
randomly from a master jury list compiled by the jury commission.
The Yancey County Jury Commission is comprised of three individuals
appointed respectively by the Clerk of Superior Court, Resident Superior
Court Judge, and the Board of County Commissioners. The Commission meets each biennium
to prepare a list of prospective jurors using the voter registration lists
together with the list of licensed drivers for Yancey County. A formula is applied to arrive at
a specific number of prospective jurors whose names are then placed on a
list which ultimately serves as the master list from which random names
are then drawn for service for a specific session of court.
